Elmwood Park Unveils Vietnam War Memorial

For years, Ronald Szymanski says no one knew he was a Vietnam War Veteran.

"Nobody in town knew I was in 'Nam. Nobody," he said. "I coached Little League for 15 years. I was involved with all kinds of stuff in town — Boys Club. And nobody knew I was in 'Nam because I was too scared to tell them."

Szymanski's experience illustrates the cold reception Vietnam War veterans received when they returned and one of the ways the town of Elmwood Park hopes to provide a long overdue welcome home.

Elmwood Park unveiled its new Vietnam War Memorial October 19 at the corner of Mola Boulevard and Van Riper Avenue.
