St. Thomas icons
When I grew up on St. Thomas, I knew about a lot of these icons, but we never visited them. That was something that tourists did. I remember seeing the tram going up to the top of the mountain, and knowing it was something tourists did. I had no idea where they were going and was never curious to find out. I just knew it wasn’t for us.
On this trip, I became a St. Thomas tourist for the first time. I was the guy walking around downtown with a St. Thomas souvenir t-shirt and a camera around my neck. I became one of those guys.
And so I saw my island from a totally different point of view. I went up to the top of the mountain where the trams went. Found a spectacular overlook and a wonderful restaurant where we had our anniversary dinner.
I visited historic churches and sites that I had driven by and never seen up close. I went to Magen’s Bay and Coral World and experienced them anew.
I dined in some of the well-known restaurants with their breathtaking views. Now I see why the tourists flocked there. I got to appreciate the beauty of the island in a very different way.
